Accept Crypto Payments with FOSSBilling Payment Gateway

A Cryptonly account and an API key are enough. Install the adapter, save the credentials, and FOSSBilling invoices can be paid in crypto. The steps below are the whole setup.

How to start accepting crypto payments on FOSSBilling

  1. Sign up for a Cryptonly account

Create a merchant account in the Cryptonly dashboard. That account issues the API key, account id, and webhook signing key used in the steps below.

  2. Generate an API key

Create a key under Settings → Security → API keys with accounts.list, invoices.create, and invoices.list. Copy the account id from Accounts, and the webhook signing key from Settings → Security. Saving the gateway without that signing key is blocked.

  3. Install the FOSSBilling adapter

Download the adapter from the FOSSBilling extension directory and extract the archive in the FOSSBilling root so it merges with the existing library folder. Install Cryptonly under System → Payment gateways → New payment gateway. The upload path and gateway fields are in the FOSSBilling integration guide.

    library/Payment/Adapter/Cryptonly/Cryptonly.php
  4. Save the gateway settings

Enter the API key, account id, and webhook signing key. Leave a secret blank on a later save to keep the stored value. Turn on Test mode only when the credentials are from the Cryptonly sandbox. The adapter checks the key and account id with GET /accounts when you save it.

  5. Accept invoice payments

Use a public HTTPS address for the FOSSBilling site so Cryptonly can deliver the webhook. On an invoice, the client pays on the hosted page. A signed invoice.statusChanged webhook adds the amount still due as account credit and pays the invoice from that credit. A short payment is added as account credit and the invoice stays unpaid. Returning from the hosted page does not mark the invoice paid. The adapter sends this webhook URL with each invoice.

    {siteurl}ipn.php?gateway_id={gateway_id}&invoice_id={invoice_id}

What is FOSSBilling

FOSSBilling is open-source billing software for hosting companies and other service businesses. It issues invoices, keeps client accounts, and records each payment through a payment adapter.

A payment adapter lives in library/Payment/Adapter. You extract it into that folder, install it under Payment gateways, and clients see it when they pay an invoice.

Cryptonly uses that adapter. Invoice totals stay in the invoice currency. The client pays on a Cryptonly page. A short payment becomes account credit, and a signed webhook pays the invoice when that credit covers the total.

FOSSBilling FAQ

  • Which FOSSBilling versions does the adapter support?

FOSSBilling 0.7 or newer, on PHP 8.2 or newer.

  • Do I need to build a crypto checkout page?

No. The client pays on a Cryptonly hosted page and returns to the invoice. You do not build a wallet screen or watch the chain yourself.

  • What does it cost?

0.5% per payment, with no setup fee and no monthly fee.

  • Can I test the adapter before taking real payments?

Yes. Test mode runs the hosted page and the webhook on the Cryptonly sandbox. Turn test mode off and switch to production credentials when you are ready to accept live payments.

  • Do invoice amounts have to be in crypto?

No. Keep invoices in the invoice currency. Cryptonly converts the amount when the client checks out.

  • How does FOSSBilling know an invoice is paid?

Cryptonly sends a signed invoice.statusChanged webhook to ipn.php. Paid and overpaid add the amount still due as account credit, then pay the invoice from that credit. An overpay is not stored as extra credit. A partial payment is added as account credit and the invoice stays unpaid. Returning from the hosted page does not mark the invoice paid.

  • Does Cryptonly charge subscription renewals?

No. Subscriptions are off. A renewal invoice is paid with a new checkout.
